Carlos V

King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor

Admire the wax figure of Carlos V, the monarch who presided over the largest empire in European history. His legacy spans territories from Europe to South America, making him a symbol of power and international transcendence.

Born in Ghent in 1500, he inherited an immense legacy: he was King of Spain (as Charles I) and Holy Roman Emperor. He ruled over an empire where "the sun never set", from Europe to South America. During his reign he fought wars against France, German Protestants, and the Ottoman Empire. He promoted the exploration of South America and consolidated the power of the Spanish monarchy. After abdicating in favor of his son Felipe II, he retired to the Monastery of Yuste.  Interesting fact: he spoke several languages, but said he used Spanish to talk to God, German with his horses, and French with the ladies.
